TF North Sophomore Chosen for Prestigious Study Abroad Program
March 11, 2015
TF North sophomore Jennifer Reyes-Macias was recently selected to participate in the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Language. For seven weeks this summer, Jennifer will study and live with a host family in northern Spain in the city of Oviedo.
An honor roll student with a 3.0 grade point average, Jennifer is a member of the TF North cross country team. She is the second student this school year from TF North to be selected for this prestigious study abroad program. Senior Ivan Cazarin, who was also selected for the program, will be placed in France.
Jennifer and her family set up a campaign on crowdfunding website Indiegogo to raise funds to pay for the program costs. Donors interested in helping Jennifer fund her trip can make a donation by visiting https://life.indiegogo.com/fundraisers/help-me-study-abroad-in-spain or may send a check payable to Indiana University to: Indiana University - Accounts Receivable Department 78896 P.O. Box 7800 Detroit, MI 48278-0896.
TF North Spanish teacher Jennifer Ramos remarked that learning a foreign language is critical to thriving in a global, multicultural society in the 21st century. Ramos acknowledged that proficiency in multiple languages provides students with the skills to break down language and cultural barriers.
Superintendent Dr. Creg E. Williams pointed out that a new state law allows Illinois school districts to add a "Seal of Biliteracy" to high school diplomas and transcripts for students who demonstrate mastery in two or more languages. Though District 215 has not yet awarded this credential, Williams suggested that the district may be interested in doing so in the immediate future.
