TF North Mock Trial Team Headed to State Competition
March 6, 2015

The TF North Mock Trial team won 2nd place at the 6th Municipal District's Mock Trial Competition on Saturday, February 21st. The team will go on to compete against 40 other high schools throughout the state in a two day competition that will be held in Champaign at the University of Illinois law school campus on Saturday, March 14th and Sunday, March 15th.

Coach Tasha White explained that the mock trial offers an opportunity for students to increase their knowledge of the judicial system by learning how to prepare and present a legal case, improve their oral, research, writing and team building skills, and learn good citizenship. Through the program, students act as expert witnesses, prosecutors, and defense attorneys in simulated court cases judged by actual Illinois judges and attorneys.

This marks the second consecutive year that the TF North Mock Trial team has advanced to the state tournament.

Superintendent Dr. Creg E. Williams suggested that the mock trial program offers students the opportunity to learn interdisciplinary skills in communication, problem solving, creative thinking, writing, and reading.

TF North Principal Dr. Dwayne Evans pointed out that while some of the students that participate on the mock team want to attend law school, others want to improve their public speaking skills and self-confidence.

Participating students include freshman Kayla Davis and juniors Dejaa Neely, Briana-Marie Trice, Brianna Byers, Jhanee Selvie, Sade May, NaTaysha Weatherall, Jessica Brooks. The team's seniors consist of Damian Melson and Teona Daniels. Novice members of the TF North Mock Trial include juniors Tiana Bogard, Shacara Shaw, Loreal Walton, Steven Payne, and senior Angelica Houston.
