Student Services

Thornton Fractional High School District 215 offers a continuum of special education services that can be combined in a variety of ways to meet the individual needs of each student who meets the criteria defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). You may obtain a copy of our continuum of placement options here . Policies and procedures regarding special education in our district may be viewed by clicking the link located under the Resources section of this page.

The purpose of the Special Education Department is to meet the needs of students identified with a disability under the categories found in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The curriculum used to provide specialized instruction to students conforms with the graduation requirements of Thornton Fractional District 215 and includes the content and general nature of the curriculum received by their peers.

Specific levels of instruction, materials, and strategies are selected to meet the individual learner's needs consistent with his/her Individualized Education Plan (IEP). The ultimate goal of these services is to prepare students for participation in general education rather than special education courses. Students work with a case manager to determine post-secondary plans that will allow them to be lifelong learners who contribute to their community.

Students with disabilities who do not qualify for an individualized education program under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, may qualify for services under Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 if the student (1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (2) has a record of a physical or mental impairment, or (3) is regarded as having a physical or mental impairment.
